Barbie

Walking through WalMart yesterday something caught my eye as I walked past the toy section. Barbie has made a transformation. When Barbie was first introduced in 1959 she was marketed as a Teenage Fashion Model. Since then Barbie has become an icon for young girls around the world. She was marketed as a powerful girl who knows what she wants.Barbie has been changed recently. She has a smaller bust and a larger waist. She has brought up many controversies concerning her unattainable size and some questionable Barbie themes including Totally Tattoos Barbie who has a lower back tattoo of the name Ken.
I can remember playing with many Barbies, and I am sure I will buy Barbie for my daughter when the time comes.

  1. I was never into Barbie, but now that you bring it up, I can’t believe they have a tattoo one now. It is like Barbie turned into a naughty girl. It would not be one of the Babies that someone would want to give to their child.
However, after thinking about it, maybe it is a good thing that they have a tattoo Barbie. It would show children that there are many different types of girls out there. I have mixed feelings about this Barbie situation. I would not by it for my girl. I’d rather buy her a soccer ball or some other toy that would keep her active.

  2. I am sure I will buy a Barbie for my daughter purely for the reason that I had them as a child. I think as a parent I will stay away from the Totally Tattoos Barbie and I'll lean more towards a Barbie with a career or a talent. I have so many good memories playing with my dolls, and I hope new themes like this will not ruin the appeal of Barbie for future generations.

  3. Someone in my other women's studies course did a presentation on this topic and I think that its good the measurements changed. However, she is still extremely tiny and this does not represent the body of the majority of American women and that takes a toll on the children that play with barbie.
